County Limerick · A living natural history

Every place in Limerick has a natural history.
Give yours a future.

A garden behind a hotel. The trees beside a supermarket. A river on your daily walk. Discover the extraordinary nature of ordinary places — and help remember what changes.

Limerick county experience — development preview. Photography is illustrative, not a verified observation or participating venue.

The people behind the places

Limerick's custodians

Each participating place will have its own profile, approved public observations and custodian. A custodian can choose whether selected records appear here. The directory will show confirmed participants only.

Founding custodians — invitations open

No Limerick custodian has yet been confirmed for public listing. We will not invent partnerships or display private contact details.

Become a founding custodian

A county of remarkable places

Not just hotels. Everywhere nature has a story.

From a small business to a great estate, every custodian has their own place, their own observations and their own decisions about what to share.

Hotels & places to stay

Let guests discover the changing nature of your grounds, gardens and nearby walks.

Shops & local businesses

From independent shops to supermarket franchisees: invite customers to notice what grows and lives nearby.

The ceramic doorway

A beautiful tile. A story that keeps growing.

A tile starts the story

A numbered ceramic QR tile opens the nature page for that exact place.

02

People notice something

Visitors contribute photographs, sounds and observations, with a date and place.

03

Your custodian reviews it

Your team decides what becomes public. An observation is not a professional survey.

04

Limerick discovers it

You choose which approved records, if any, are also visible on the county page.

Limerick's people and places

Explore Limerick by landscape

Rivers. Parks. Walks. Ponds. The places between.

Start with familiar landscapes, then follow their natural history as people and custodians contribute. This first collection is an editorial guide. Selecting a place leads to the county's own evidence search, not an external map.

The county nature library

What is changing in Limerick?

A county-wide collection should make it possible to explore nature by place, species, season and year. These are the first editorial themes — not claims that records have already been collected.

The Shannon and its tributaries

Riverbank life, water levels, seasonal changes and observations alongside independent water evidence.

Collection being developed

Gardens, trees and hedgerows

Flowering dates, changing leaves, pollinators and the quiet transformations of familiar places.

Wildlife after dark

Bats, moths and nocturnal sounds — with sensitive locations protected and uncertain identifications labelled.

Collection being developed

A county through the seasons

The first blossom, last swallow and recurring signs of spring, summer, autumn and winter.

Everyone has something to notice

You don't need to be an expert to begin.

A child's photograph and an ecologist's survey can both matter. They simply need to be described honestly and kept in the right evidence category.

For everyone

Notice a bird, wildflower, insect or seasonal change. Record what you saw, when and where. You do not need to know its name.

Ask how to contribute

For schools

Make a class nature diary: first flowers, changing leaves, birdsong and local habitats. Adults manage submissions and permissions.

Plan a school project

For ecologists

Find the provenance behind published observations, identify gaps and distinguish informal sightings from surveyed evidence.

Discuss evidence collaboration

For journalists

Follow stories through time, check original sources and request clarification before publishing a claim about nature.

Request a research briefing

A simple observation has four essentials

What you noticed · Where you noticed it · When you noticed it · A photograph, sound or description if you have one. If you're unsure of the species, say so. Please don't disturb wildlife or photograph children or other people without appropriate permission.

Direct public submissions to the county hub are not enabled yet. Use the enquiry links to join an assisted pilot.

Trust comes from showing the evidence

A sighting isn't a survey. And that's all right.

Every published record should show its source, observation date, publication date and evidence status. Earlier records remain part of the history when a later record changes the picture.

If a source hasn't been checked, we should say “Not searched here” — never pretend that an empty page proves there is no wildlife.

Community observation

What someone noticed and shared; identification and completeness may be uncertain.

Professional evidence

A documented survey or specialist record, with method, scope, date and author visible where permitted.

Published source

An external dataset or report, attributed to its publisher and checked for licence and currency.

Start with the original sources

Useful information already exists. Let's connect it responsibly.

These are independent starting points for research, not feeds currently connected to the Limerick platform. Coverage, licences and update dates must be checked before any information is republished.

Your place. Your decisions.

Independent records. Connected by choice.

Every participating place is intended to have its own separately provisioned database and custodian controls. Your records stay yours. You decide whether selected approved discoveries also appear in County Limerick.

County sharing is designed to start off. Nothing is shared just because a place joins. Sensitive information and private submissions must remain protected.
